I believe all Christians and non-Christians have asked themselves these questions: What is the purpose of prayer? Does prayer really work with God? Are there ways that the bible teaches us to pray effectively? In this lesson we will look to the scriptures for the answers to these questions.

ADORATION- Ephesians 3:14-21 Paul emphasizes our need to give God our devotion and adoration. He is certainly more than worthy of our praise because of who He is and what He’s done

I Chronicles 29:10-13 The Old Testament saints knew how to give adoration to God.

CONFESSION- I John 1:7-9 The Christian enjoys the cleansing power of the blood of Christ.

Proverbs 28:13 Solomon knew that to hide sin was wrong, to confess sin was rewarded with mercy.

Luke 18:10-14 Confession was important enough for Jesus to give several examples in the bible.

THANKSGIVING- Ephesians 5:20; Colossians 4:2 Being thankful is emphasized repeatedly throughout the entire bible.

Philippians 4:6 The cure for anxiety is to pray for everything with thanksgiving to God.

SUPPLICATION- (to asked or request with humility) Philippians 4:6; I Timothy 2:1-2 In these verses we see that we are to pray with humility for others and for ourselves.

I Kings 8:2 Solomon prayed with supplication at the dedication of the temple of God.

Acts 7:59- 60 When Stephen was stoned, he made supplicating prayer for his killers.

FORGIVENESS- I John 1:9 The Christians finds forgiveness in their prayer of confession.

Acts 8:22 The wayward Christian can find forgiveness through a prayer of repentance.

PEACE FROM GOD- Philippians 4:6-7 Through humble prayer we find God’s great peace.

STRENGTH FROM GOD- Ephesians 3:14-16, 20 Paul prayed that the church might be strengthened in their inner man.

WISDOM FROM GOD- James 5:1-8 We are promised wisdom if we pray without doubting.

THERE IS HEALING WITH GOD- James 5:14-15 With prayer, God sometimes will heal.

MUCH CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED- James 5:16 We have God’s promise that much can be done through fervent (intense, burning desire) and effectual (producing the desired affect) prayer.

FAITH IS REQUIRED- Matthew 21:22; Hebrews 11:6 We must have faith that God will hear and answer our prayers according to His perfect will for our lives.

BE HUMBLE- Luke 18:14; James 4:10 Humility in prayer leads to exaltation by God.

PRAY FOR GOD’S WILL- I John 5:14 The most important thing is not our will but His be done.

THANKSGIVING- Ephesians 5:20 Give God thanks for all things He has done and is doing.

PRAY IN JESUS NAME- John 14:6 The only way to approach God the Father is through Jesus.

Hebrews 7:24-25; John 14:13 We recognize Jesus as our “high priest” who intercedes for us.
