THE GREAT COMMISSION

                                                          MISSIONARY WORK
                                                         August 31, 2008

Mathew 28:19-20; Luke 24:45-47; Acts 1:6-8  Jesus gives us 'The Great Commission'

to "go into all the world and preach the gospel".

QUESTION?? HOW IS HIS CHURCH DOING WITH THIS COMMAND FROM GOD??

                         I.   WHO ARE MISSIONARIES AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

Acts 13:2; Acts 9:15  Missionaries are 'called' and 'chosen' by God to "go".

Acts 13:3  Missionaries are 'sent' by local churches (Barnabas and Paul.

Acts 14:21-23  Missionaries are to teach and preach God's Word, establish local churches, and

train local pastors to take over the new work for God.

Acts 14:24-27  Missionaries are to report back to their local sending church.

Acts 9:26-29; Acts 13:50-52; II Corinthians 11:23-28  Often times missionaries are terribly

persecuted for their stand on God's Word. There is always a price to pay for service to God.

I Corinthians 16:9; I Thessalonians 2:17-18  Missionaries are often hindered from their work

by Satan himself.  Ehpesians 6:12 (Spiritual warfare).

QUESTION? Is Satan concerned enough with our involvement in missions to hinder us?

Acts 18:1-5; Acts 20:33-34  Often times missionaries must take a secular job to support his

family and his church because of insufficient support.

II.  WHAT IS THE CHURCH'S RESPONSIBILITY IN MISSIONS?

Luke 12:47-48; Romans 14:10  Jesus holds us accountable for what we do with what we have.

I Corinthians 16:1-3; II Corinthians 8:1-8  The local churches are responsible to support the

missionary financially so the missionary can go when and where God needs them to go.

One of the biggest hindrance on the mission field is 'too many church programs' back home.

Ephesians 6:18-20; II Thessalonians 3:1  We are responsible to pray for our missionaries.

I Corinthians 16:15-18  Some of us have been called to become "addicted" to helping

missionaries. We must make "the great commission" a priority which means sacrifice.

III.  WHAT MAKES A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR THE MISSION FIELD?

Acts 13:1-2 A great candidate for the mission field should have these "Barnabas" characteristics:

   A. Acts 4:36-37  Be sympathetic

   B. Acts 9:26-27  Be a friend to those in need

   C. Acts 11:24  Be Spirit filled

   D. Acts 11:25-26  Be a inspiring influence to others

   E. Acts 14:12  Be trustworthy

   F. Acts 13:2  Be willing and able to adapt to the mission field

For missions to succeed, the church must once again take the "Great Commission"

as a priority command from our Lord. We must preach and teach missions to our young

people and our adults of all ages. God used David as a young boy to inspire a nation. God used

Moses at 80 years old to lead a nation out of slavery.

The call from God has no age limit. The problem is with us, not with God. God is calling people

to help those in need. The problem is we are not heeding the call to go, or not willing to sacrifice

personal comfort to help those that are already on the mission field.

   God bless
