INTRODUCTION STATEMENTS

1.     Bartlett’s Book of Quotations is full of ancient and modern proverbs.

2.     All nations have proverbs that represent their historical culture.

3.     Only a handful of men have spoken enough proverbs to cover more than a few pages in a book.

4.     The first seven chapters of Proverbs are addressed to young people, particularly young men.   (See 1:8, and 1:15)

5.     Proverbs and Psalms should be read equally as often by the Christian in order to build a balanced life for God.

6.     Charles Bridges wrote, in 1846, the following statement about Proverbs and its influence on young people:

“What this invaluable Book impresses upon their minds is he importance of deep-seated principles in the heart; the responsibility of conduct in every step of life; the danger of t rifling deviations for expediency’s sake; the value of self-discipline; the habit of bringing everything to the Word of God; the duty of weighing in just balances a worldly and heavenly portion....These lessons...will prove the best security against all attempts to loosen the hold of principle....”

7.     We should understand that the purpose of Proverbs is not to reach secualr or political wisdom, nor is it intended to compete with the wisdom of worldly wise men.

         -     The Book of Proverbs was written to teach us the wisdom and knowledge of God in the practical events of our lives.
