PROVERBS 1:10-19

AN EXAMPLE OF A FATHER’S INSTRUCTION

Introduction:     These verses are written to a godly son who is leaving the security of a godly home, and going out into the theatre of the world.

I.     There are two types of enticers that a godly son is to avoid: INTERNAL and EXTERNAL.   (10)

     A.   Internal enticers are the thoughts and desires.

          1.     All godly young men must face the gulf that lies between their godly homes and the sinful lives of ungodly men.

          2.     Ungodly thoughts race across the mind, unseen.

          3.     All murders, adulteries, and robberies began in the unseen thoughts of the mind.

          4.     This is why David cries out for a clean heart in Psalm 51:10.

          5.     No defense will be long-lasting that does not reach the thoughts of young people.

     B.     External enticers are friends and family who have gone astray, and leading others astray.

          1.     Wickedness loves company, and wicked men cannot enjoy their sins alone.

          2.     Many young people are drawn to men who are bold enough to do dangerous things.

          3.     Ungodly friends should not be the companions of a godly son.

     C.     In 1884, William Arnot wrote about two snares that young people should avoid:

          1.     “High in the list of dangerous enticements to the young stand THE THEATRE.”

               -     “...men never choose theatres as instruments of elevating the community.

               -     A modern application would be dvds, televisions, matinees, etc.

          2.    “Intoxicating drinks constitute one of the most formidable dangers to youth in the present day.”

               -     A modern application would include any habit forming substance that can destroy a young man.

              -     “Beware lest the cub which you feed becomes the lion which devours you.”

     D.     Friendships that are glued together by the slime of sin will eventually fall apart.

II.     A breakdown of Solomon’s illustration.   (11-19)

     A.     Beware of friends who cheapen life.   (11-12)

     B.     Beware of friends who cheapen the property of others.   (13)

     C.     Beware of friends who wants to benefit from you financially.   (14)

     D.     Beware of friends who are always doing things morally wrong.   (16)

     E.     Beware of friends who are greedy.   (19)

III.     What is a godly young man to do when faced with these sins?

     A.     “Consent thou not.”   (10)

          1.     Your response should be short and sweet - “NO.”

          2.     The Bible does not teach a gradual separation from the world.

     B.     “Walk not with them....”   (15)

                         -Don’t associate with them.

          1.     Walking with he ungodly is a form of consent.

          2.     You can’t walk with someone without going where they go.

     C.     Above all, a godly young man should not displease God.

     D.     A godly young man should enjoy the companionship of God and His Word.

IV.     Some practical advice to a godly young man when going out into the world.

     A.     Improve your manners.

     B.     Improve your mind.

     C.     Improve your service.

     D.     Improve your friends.

Conclusion:   All of this is an example of a father’s instruction.
