DEUTERONOMY 32

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SONG OF MOSES

I.                   Moses introduces his song in verses 1-3.

A.         The “doctrine” is like drops of rain, dew, and showers.   (1-2)

     B.     The song’s purpose is to “ascribe ye greatness unto our God.”   (3)

II.                There are some facts about God that Moses wanted the Children of Israel to learn and remember in song.

A.         The greatness of God to Israel is that:

1.         God is the Rock of Israel.   (4, 15, 18, 30, and 31).

2.         God is a God of Truth.   (4)

3.         God is without iniquity.   (4)

4.         God is “just and right.”

5.         God is a God of judgment.

B.         So, Moses is equating the greatness of God in verse 3 with the characteristics of God in verse 4.

III.             The remainder of the song is about the relationship between God and Israel.   (5-44)

A.         Israel has been a nation with a terrible struggle – the struggle of stability towards God.

1.         They have corrupted themselves with perversion and crookedness.   (5)

2.         They have forgotten God.   (6 and 18)

3.         They provoked God to jealousy.   (16 ands 21)

B.         God has had to deal with Israel’s instability in severe ways:

1.         God was provoked to anger.   (16)

2.         God became very distant to them.   (20)

3.         Physical calamities fell upon Israel.   (22-26)

IV.              Instability towards God is not God’s Will – He desires to remain close to His children.

A.         Israel was the apple of God’s eye.   (10)

B.         The care of God for His children is compared to an eagle in verse 11.

-          notice the term, “fluttereth over her young.”

V.                  Moses closes the song with statements of fact that God is in control.

A.         God is the judge.   (36)

B.         God is the only God, and no one can defeat Him.   (39

VI.              Moses tells the Children of Israel to live by God’s Word.   (46_)

A.         Remember that God’s Word is your life.   (46)

     B.     All of your hope rests in God, and His Word.    (47)
