DEUTERONOMY 31

THE CONTINUAL PRESENCE OF GOD

 

 

 

 

I.                   The Promise of God’s Continual Presence  (1-8).

 

A.         Moses was an old man, and about to die.

 

1.         He had CONVERSATIONS with God.  (6)

2.         He had CONVICTIONS from God.

3.         He had COMMUNION with God.

 

B.         God’s presence is the greatest inheritance that can be left to the next generation.

 

1.      The inheritance of the land came with the presence of God.   (7)

2.      God will be with Joshua as He was with Moses.   (8)

3.      The great  example of Moses is that a man can live in the presence of God continually.

 

II.     The Law to Read the Law Every Seven Years   (9-13).

 

A.         Moses wrote the Law and delivered it to the priests.  (9)

 

1.         Every seven years, all Israel was to hear the Law read publicly.   (10-11)

2.         It was to be read in a place of God’s choosing.

 

     B.     What was the purpose of this public reading every seven years?   (12-13)

 

1.         To HEAR the Word of God  (12).

2.         To LEARN the Word of God  (12).

3.         To FEAR God  (12).

4.         For the sake of the Children, that they may HEAR, LEARN, AND FEAR the Word of God.   (13)

 

III.     God warns Moses that His death will mark the beginning of rebellion   (14-22).

 

A.         It is ironic, that people blessed by God would turn their backs on Him.

 

          1.     After the death of Moses, the people will turn to idols   (16).

          2.     God is angry when His children rebel against Him   (15-17).

 

     B.     God commands that Moses write a song about God and His commandments   (19).

 

1.         The purpose of this song is to constantly remind the people of God and His Word   (19).

2.         The song was to be a part of the children’s education   (21-22).

-          This song is given to us in the next chapter.

 

 

 

 

IV.     Moses charges Joshua and the religious leaders   (23-30).

 

A.         To Joshua, Moses reminds him of what it takes to be God’s man  (23).

 

1.         Be strong

2.         Be courageous

3.         Remember, you are in the presence of God.

 

     B.     The religious leaders are warned to stay true and committed to God   (24-30).

 

          1.     They are to keep the Law in their possession   (26).

2          They are not to corrupt themselves with ungodliness (29).

 

B.         God demands holiness and right living among the leaders of His children
