DEUTERONOMY 30

THEREFORE CHOOSE LIFE

Introduction -     The first ten verses of this chapter lay out three primary promises of God to His people:

1.         God will give them the land of promise, and multiply their  population. ( 5)

2.         God will curse the enemies of Israel.  (7)

3.         God will bless the work and labor of Israel.   (9)

*** The key to being blessed by God is found in verse 10 – Look at the Book, and you’re looking at the key.

I.                   Moses personalizes Israel’s walk with God.   (11-14)

A.         Moses sets straight the false belief that God is far away from the presence of His children.

1.         God is not hidden from you.   (11)

2.         God is not far away from you.

3.         You do not have to go to Heaven in order to hear from God.   (12)

4.         You do not have to cross an ocean in order to hear from God.   (13)

B.         God, and His Word, are before you, (in front, beside, and behind you), and in your hearts.   (14)

1.         The child of God is always in the presence of God.

2.         When the Word of God is in your heart, you have a constant guide in your life.

II.     The Word of God is literally the intersection point in your life,   (15)

A.         God sets before His children roads of life and death.   (15)

1.         He has commanded His children to do three things in order to choose life:   (16)

-          Love the Lord thy God.

-          Walk in His ways.

-          Obey His commandments.

2.         This is what it means to turn towards God in the intersection of life.

B.         If the Children of  Israel turn away from God, the road in the opposite direction is clearly laid out:

1.         You will be drawn away to serve other gods.   (17)

2.         Your days will be shortened.   (18)

III.      Therefore choose life…..     (19-20)

A.         This is a common phrase in our society today – linked to the pro-Life Movement.

1.         God is the Author of life.

2.         Life is sacred.

3.         Life is a gift from God.

B.         In this verse, the phrase pertains to God Himself.

1.         Notice verse 20: “….he is thy life.”

2.         Oswald Chambers once wrote: “Eternal life is not a gift FROM God, but the gift OF God.”

3.         Life begins at the cross and the empty tomb.

4.         The death of Christ, and the life of Christ, give us life.

Conclusion -     When you choose God, you choose life.
