DEUTERONOMY 17
Living by the Letter of the Law



I. Under the Law, idol worshippers were to be executed.   (1-7)

	A.There must be 100% proof that a person is guilty.   (4)

	B.Concerning the Law, what is a person guilty of?

     		1.  Serving other gods   (3)
		2.  Worshipping other gods

	C.How was the execution to take place?

		1.There must be two or three witnesses of the execution.   (6)
		2.The means of execution was stoning.   (5)
		3.The official witnesses were the first to cast stones.   (7)
		4.This was followed by everyone else.

	D.What was the purpose of executing idol worshippers?

          Answer:   To remove evil influences from among the people.   (7)

II. How were the Children of God to solve life’s problems?

	A.The type of problems are described in verse 8, (summed up with the word “controversy ”).

	B.There are three Biblical steps to solving controversy between God’s Children:

		1.Find out what God’s Word says about the controversy.  ( 9-11 )
		2.Do what the Word of God says to do, completely.   (11)
		3.Do not make any detours from the Word of God.   (12)

	C.What if a person, under the Law, disregards the Law and chooses to live in disobedience?

		1.Seeking Gods wisdom, and then rejecting it when you receive it, is considered "evil" in the sight of God.   (12)
		2.Under the Law, Law rejecters were put to death.   (12)

		 - all of the people were to “hear and fear” these examples.

III. God’s qualifications for a king.   (14-20)

	A.It is assumed that Israel will have a king.   (14)

	B.There were some basic characteristics that the Children of Israel were to seek:

		1.He must meet Gods standards.   (15)
		2.He must be a Jew.
		3.He must be focused on Israel and not Egypt.   (16)
		4.He must be a one woman man.   (17)
		5.He must not love money for himself.
		6.He must read God’s Law every day.
		7.He must be a keeper of God’s Law himself.   (19)
		8.He must not be arrogant.   (20)
		9.He must be uncompromising in keeping the Law of God.
	        10.He must always have the best interest of everyone as his goal.
