JOSHUA 4:1-24

WHEN THE CHILDREN ASK THE FATHERS

 

 

I.     What is a memorial?

 

     A.     It is a marker of identification for generations to come.

 

     B.     It is usually made of rock or marble in order that it may last for generations.

 

     C.     A memorial usually reflects the values of the people who erected it.

 

     D.     It leaves a permanent connection between the people who erected it and the generations to come.

 

     E.     It is a source of inspiration, education, and values for future generations.

 

II.     Notice the foresight that God used to direct Joshua:

 

     A.     “In time to come” (6 and 21)

 

          1.     God is interested in the children’s understanding of God’s dealings with their fathers.

          2.     God desires that the children know about past miracles in the lives of their fathers.

 

     B.     Notice the question, and notice who asks the question: (6 and 21).

 

          1.     The Question: “What means these stones.

          2.     The Inquirers: “ “your children”.

 

III.     Fathers have a great responsibility, and a mandate from God, to be godly.

 

     A.     Fathers are responsible for providing a happy home-life for the children.

 

     B.     Fathers are responsible for providing a spiritual hone-life for their children (Deuteronomy 6)

 

     C.     Fathers are responsible for providing economic stability for their children (Proverbs 13:22).

 

     D.     Fathers are responsible for the education of their children (Deuteronomy 6).

 

IV.     What are some memorials that 21st Century fathers need to erect for their children.

 

     A.      The Sanctity of Marriage

     B.     Character matters

 

     C.     Love God

 

     D.     Love your neighbor

 

     E.     Love your country

 

     F.     Be responsible

 

     G.     A strong, local church

 

     H.     Faith in God, and salvation through God’s Son
