DEUTERONOMY 13

BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHETS

 

I.     Moses warns the Jews to beware of false prophets.     (1-5). 

A.         These false prophets also have many wonderful traits: 

1.         They dream dreams for ungodly reasons.   (1)

2.         They perform signs and wonders.   (2)

3.         They give advice.

 

B.         These false prophets also have many terrible traits: 

1.         They are loyal to false gods.

2.         They attempt to persuade others to follow after the false gods.

3.         Beware of any leader who leads you away from God.

 

     C.     The false prophets were to be put to death.     (5)

 

II.     Moses warns the Jews to beware of ungodly family members.     (6-11) 

     A.     No family member should be able to persuade you to turn your back on God.    (6). 

1.         Beware of secret conversations with the ungodly.   (6)

2.         Do not worship anything in the world.   (7)

3.         Do not consent to the pleas of the ungodly family members.   (8) 

B.      The punishment, under the Law, for attempting to persuade others to worship false
 gods was death.   (9-11).

 

III.     Beware of the ungodly city.    (12-18) 

A.         Do not listen to the ungodly culture that seems to dominate city life. 

1.         The children of Belial will want you to follow them.   (13)

2.         Determine if rumors of ungodliness are true.   (14)

 

B.         The entire city that is given over to false gods is to be killed.   (15) 

          1.     The material goods of the city are to be destroyed.    (16)

          2.     The city is not to be rebuilt.     (16)

 

IV.              God desires to show mercy and blessings – but not at the expense of truth.   (17-18) 

A.         When the Children of Israel listen to God they are blessed by God.   (18

B.         They are to do what is right in God’s eyes.
