A FAMILY MAN
Introduction: Solomon continues his warnings to his godly son about the dangers of loose women and bad morals.
I. Solomon tells his son to be loyal and devoted to his wife. (14-15)
A. Solomon compares loving your wife to drinking water from your own well.
1. A godly man should not seek after women who are not his wives.
2. A great part of marital happiness is being satisfied with what you have.
3. Contentment, in your home, is vital to happiness in your home.
4. Young men need to be instructed that marriage and contentment with their spouses go hand in hand.
B. The idea of your own well signifies a place of refreshment that belongs only to you.
1. A godly marriage should result in a godly home, and a godly home is a place of refreshment.
2. Young men need to be instructed that marriage is strictly defined.
- “Till death do us part” means total loyalty to your spouse, for life.
II. Everyone should know that the godly young man loves his wife. (16-19)
A. The symbolic well of marriage at home, becomes a river publicly.
1. It’s not exactly known what Solomon’s symbolism means in verses 16-18.
2. Possibly, Solomon is stating the importance of private devotion being public knowledge.
3. The people who are “in the streets” (16) and the strangers (17) need to see that the godly young man who is married, is a family man.
B. A godly young man should always rejoice over his wife. (18)
C. A godly young man should always keep the love of his wife as the priority of his life. (19)
III. God is watching you in your marriage. (20-21)
A. Solomon asks his son a question: “Why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman......” (20)
1. The word “ravished” means “to be taken away.”
2. Why would a godly son be fooled by the short-sightedness of a strange woman’s lure?
B. God is staring at you. (21)
1. The word “pondereth” means “to stare.”
2. In your relationships with other women, God is staring at your activities.
IV. Solomon’s final warning about falling for a strange woman. (22-23)
A. Falling for a strange woman is a form of slavery.
- “ he shall be holden wit h the cords of his sins.” (22)
B. Falling for a strange woman will cause you to die as an ignorant man. (23)
- “ without instruction.”
C. Great folly will be the end of the foolish young man.
Conclusion: A godly, young man, needs to be instructed about the importance of a godly marriage - and the dangers of loose women.
