SOLOMON’S ADVICE ABOUT UNGODLY WOMEN
Introduction: No subject takes up more space, in the first seven chapters of Proverbs, than the danger of ungodly women to a godly young man.
I. Solomon introduces this subject with a reminder of four important words: (1-2)
A. “attend unto my WISDOM.” - Look at life from God’s perspective. (1)
B. “bow thine ear to my UNDERSTANDING - mentally grasp these truths of God. (1)
C. “regard DISCRETION” - Learn to stop and be cautious concerning questionable decisions.
D. Let your lips “keep knowledge.” - Speak what’s true and proper.
II. Beware of the words of a worldly woman. (3-4)
A. A strange woman speaks words that appeal to a young man. (3)
1. Her words “drop as an honeycomb.” (3)
- a honeycomb is sweet, and sweet words appeal to a young man.
2. “Her mouth is smoother than oil.” (3)
- Oil feels silky, and silky words are smooth to a young man.
3. Combine these two characteristics and you have the verbal lure of a strange woman:
- Sweet and Soft words.
B. What is the end of these sweet and soft words?
1. Bitterness - referring to an end of disillusionment and disappointment. (4)
- see Ecclesiastes 7:26
- It’s not what it appeared to be in the beginning.
2. Sharpness - referring to a sword that passes through the heart. (4)
- It’s more painful than it appeared in the beginning.
3. Death - referring to inward, and possibly even physical, death.
- It’s more fatal than it appeared in the beginning.
4. Hell - referring to the destination of a luring woman.
Wild women are instruments of Satan to destroy the potential of godly, young men.
III. The strange woman acts as a distraction from godliness. (6)
A. The young man who is godly TRIES to see the truth about he strange woman. (6)
B. “Her ways are moveable.”
1. She has a variety of interests to distract the godly young man from his concentration.
2. She’s constantly changing in order to redirect the focus of the young man.
C. “that thou canst not know them.” (6)
1. He can’t see the truth because of the constant change in her.
2. His focus is constantly detoured by the words flowing from her lips.
IV. Beware of people who are in a constant state of flux (change).
A. Solomon will later warn about befriending people who are always in flux. (Prov. 24:21-22)
B. Godliness and consistency go together.
1. Strange women are moveable.
2. But notice the consistency of the godly woman. (Proverbs 31:25-28)
C. Young men are naturally action-oriented, but they should seek a woman who is consistency-oriented.
1. A consistently-oriented woman will help keep the man focused.
2. An inconsistent woman will distract more than contribute to the focus of the man.
Conclusion: Godly young men must beware of the soft and silky words of ungodly women.
