WHAT SOLOMON LEARNED FROM DAVID
Introduction: Chapter 4 is addressed to Solomon’s children, not just his son.
I. Solomon begins with an appeal for his children to hear his instruction. (1-2)
A. Solomon is confident that his advice is right.
1. He is giving “good advice.” (2)
2. His law is not to be forsaken. (2)
B. Solomon wants to be heard.
- It’s good for a father to speak to his son frequently about important things.
II. Solomon tells his children about the love of his father and mother.
A. “I was my father’s son....”
B. I was “tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.”
C. Solomon knew what all children deserve to know:
1. The love a father
2. The love of a mother
3. The security of a balanced home.
III. David’s advice to Solomon reveals the source of Solomon’s love for Wisdom. (4-19)
A. What did David tell Solomon about Wisdom?
1. “Get wisdom, get understanding” (5)
2. Wisdom will preserve and keep you. (6)
3. “Wisdom is the principal thing” (7)
4. Wisdom will promote you, and bring you to honor. (8)
5. Wisdom will add grace and glory to you. (9)
6. Wisdom will add years to your life. (10)
7. Wisdom is the source of godly, parental instruction. (11)
8. Wisdom will guide your steps in life. (12)
9. Wisdom and instruction is your life. (13)
B. What did David tell Solomon about wickedness? (14-19)
1. Don’t associate, or follow, wicked men. (14)
2. Avoid he ways of wicked men. (15)
3. Wicked people live wicked and violent lives. (16-17)
4. Godly people walk in shining light and bright ways. (18)
5. Wicked people are blind and stumbling. (19)
C. These are the things that David “taught” Solomon. (4)
1. It was David who instilled a love for Wisdom in Solomon.
2. Solomon is passing this teaching down to his children.
3. The importance of multi-generational thinking can be clearly seen.
Conclusion: Solomon wanted all of his children to know what their grandfather (David) had taught him about Wisdom
