DEUTERONOMY 6:13-25

FEARING GOD OR TEMPTING GOD

Introduction:     If you do not fear God then you will tempt God (verses 13 and 16).

I.     The Lord is concerned about our diligence concerning His Word.     (17)

A.         We are to “diligently” teach the Word of God to our children (as was seen last week).

          1.     We are to “diligently” keep the commandments of God ourselves.     (17)

          2.     We are to do what  “is right and good in the sight of the Lord.”     (18)

B.         The pattern of godly living is unmistakable in these verses:

          1.     We are to have a holy fear of God in our homes.     (13)

          2.     The fear of God is to be balanced by our love for God.     (5)

          3.     If we love and fear God, then we will be diligent in our obedience to God.     (17)

          4.     We are to diligently teach our children to LOVE, FEAR, AND OBEY God.     (7)

     C.     If we do not love, fear, and obey God then we are TEMPTING God.     (16)

          1.     When we tempt God by our disobedience we cause Him to become angry.     (15)

  2.         God is “jealous” of our devotion.

            -          this is the reason for the wilderness wanderings.

II.     What is a question that children will ask of their parents one day?     (20)

A.         The day will come when our children will ask questions about God.

1.         They will inquire about the Word of God.

2.         They will inquire about the judgment of God.

3.         They will inquire about the meaning behind the godly living of their parents.

B.         When that day comes, God has already ordained the answers we are to give:

          1.     We are to give the account of how we were born in bondage.     (21-22)

2.         We are to tell our children how God delivered us: ( “He brought us out”) – 23

3.         We are to tell why He delivered us: ( that He might bring us in”) – 23

4.         God did all of these things “for our Good always.”     (24)

C.         God has always been concerned with “our good.”

-          this is what we must teach our children.

III.     Our righteousness depends on our obedience to God’s Word.     (25)

A.         We need righteousness in our homes.

B.         Every child deserves THREE things:

1.         To have parents who introduce them to Jesus Christ.

2.         To have parents who teach them the Word of God.

3.         To have parents who DILIGENTLY seek to have a godly home.

CONCLUSION:     Let us always remember that God brought us out that He might bring us in.   (23)
