A LIFE OF SAFETY
Introduction: There are two extremes, when it comes to how we face danger: Risk without Safety, and Safety without Risk.
I. “My son, let not them depart from thine eyes.....” (21)
A. Solomon’s son is to keep godly wisdom and knowledge before his eyes continually.
1. The Bible is a silent witness in our life.
2. We should have godly things in front of us continually.
B. “Keep sound wisdom and discretion.” (21)
1. “Keep” means to guard.
2. Wisdom and discretion can be de-emphasized to the extent that ungodliness can get the best of us.
3. There is never a day that goes by that a godly son does not need to be reminded of to be godly.
II. “So shall they be life unto thy soul.” (22)
A. Your soul is the eternal, real you.
1. Godly wisdom and knowledge will effect you eternally.
2. Wisdom guides you by principle (found in God’s Word).
B. “and grace to thy neck.” (22)
1. This refers to grace (favor) being like an ornament around your neck.
2. Wisdom and godliness have eternal and temporal benefits.
III. “Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely.......” (23)
A. Godly wisdom values life - including your own.
1. Unnecessary, life-threatening risks are not wise moves for the godly man.
2. Solomon is advising his son to be careful when physical safety is required.
3. When it comes to danger, godliness and foolishness are not the same things.
B. This also refers to the kind of environment you live in, and the conditions with which you surround yourself.
- Godly people enjoy life, and do not desire to live on the edge all of the time.
C. “and thy foot shall not stumble.” (23)
1. When you walk in the light of God’s wisdom, the road is clear and straight.
2. It’s easy to avoid stumbling when you’re watching where you are going, and know where you are going.
D. The safest, most secure life on earth is a life of Godly wisdom.
- This is the kind of life that Solomon desires for his son.
IV. God is interested in the basic aspects of our lives.
A. God wants you to (be):
1. Healthy (8)
2. Have material blessings (9-10)
4. Have a God-centered world-view (19-20)
5. Have a safe life and environment (23)
B. The godly life is the best of all options to choose from.
Conclusion: Next Sunday, since danger is unavoidable - how do you deal with it?
