PROVERBS 3:16-20

THE ROLE OF WISDOM IN THE UNIVERSE

  

 

Introduction:   Solomon continues telling his son about the good qualities of Wisdom.

 

 

I.     The two hands of Wisdom   (16)

 

     A.     In Wisdom’s right hand is “length of days.”  

 

          1.     This has already been referred to in verse 2.

 

          2.     Wisdom gives to her recipient a long life.

 

     B.     In Wisdom’s left hand is “riches and honour.”

 

          1.     This has been referred to in verses 9-10.

 

          2.     “Riches” refer to worldly wealth.

 

          3.     “Honour” refers to a life of character and respect.

 

II.     Solomon reminds his son about the good qualities of Wisdom.   (17-18)

 

     A.     “Her ways are ways of pleasantness.”   (17)

 

          1.     “Pleasantness” is “a state of being pleasant.

 

          2.     A life of Wisdom will produce a pattern of life that is pleasant all  the way around.

 

     B.     “and all her paths are peace.”   (17)

 

          1.     Wisdom will direct you down a peaceful road in life.

 

          2.     If you’re guided by Wisdom, you will experience a peaceful life.

 

     C.     Wisdom is “a tree of life.”   (18)

 

          1.     A tree produces life, fruit and leaves every year.

 

          2.     Wisdom will give you a life of new wonders every year.

 

          3.     You must “lay hold upon her,” meaning that you must cling to Wisdom throughout life.

 

     D.     “Happy is everyone that retaineth her.”   (18)

 

          1.     This refers back to verse 13

 

          2.     It’s a fact of life that a life of godly Wisdom produces happiness.

          3.     It’s God’s desire that His followers live lives of enjoyment, according to Godly Wisdom.

 

III.     Solomon explains to his son the role that Wisdom played when God created the world. 

          (19-20)

 

     A.     “The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth.”   (19)

 

          1.     God established (founded) the earth according to His Wisdom.

 

          2.     God created and established the earth according to His infinite knowledge.

 

          3.     The universe operates according to certain unchanging principles established by God.

 

     B.     “by understanding hath he established the heavens.”   (19)

 

          1.     The “heavens” refer to the stars, and all outer space.

 

          2.     It’s only according to our understanding of God’s principles that we can understand the universe He created.

 

          3.     The entire universe was established by God’s Wisdom.

 

     C.     “By his knowledge the depths are broken up.”   (20)

 

          1.     The oceans of the world are controlled by the principles that God ordained at Creation.

 

          2.     The deepest parts of the seas are broken up according to the plan and purpose of God.

 

     D.     “and the clouds drop down the dew.”   (20)

 

          1.     The sky and clouds function according to God’s wise plan.

 

          2.     The dew and moisture are parts of God’s plan.

 

IV.     Why would Solomon give his son a lesson in science at this point?

 

     A.     The moral principles of God coincide with the scientific principles of God.

 

     B.     It’s important to give our children a God-centered worldview.

 

     C.     It’s important for children to see God’s hand and Wisdom on display in the world.

 

 

 

 

Conclusion:     We have the ability to be wise by allowing God to impart to us His Wisdom.
