PROVERBS 3: 5-6

TRUSTING IN THE LORD

Introduction:   Solomon has been emphasizing the heart, and building up to the life verses found in our text.

I.   “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart...”   (5)

     A.     What does it mean to trust someone?

          1.     “Trust” means  “to place confidence in.”

          2.     Trust is the opposite of suspicion, and it implies great faith in someone else.

     B.     Solomon’s son is to “trust in the Lord.”

          1.     The object of our supreme trust is God, not man.

          2.     All of our trust and confidence is to found in God.

     C.     Why would Solomon tell his son to place his trust in the Lord?

          1.     All that his son needs to know about life begins with God.   (1:7)

          2.     Trusting in God was exemplified in his home as a child.   (1:8)

          3.     The son has been taught to see God’s hand at work in the world.   ( 1:23-33)

II.     “Trust in the Lord WITH ALL THINE HEART....”   (5)

     A.     Solomon’s son is to keep God’s commandments from the heart.   (1)

           1.     “All thine heart” implies complete and total confidence in God.

           2.     Solomon’s son is to OBEY from the heart, and TRUST from the heart.

     B.     What is the opposite of trusting “in the Lord with all thine heart”?

Answer:   Leaning on your own understanding

          1.     Leaning on your own understanding means that you trust yourself, and your own abilities.

          2.     Self-confidence minus God-confidence produces bad qualities in your life:

               -     arrogance, independence from God, and moral blindness

          3.     Leaning on your own understanding makes trusting God almost impossible.

     C.     Solomon’s son is to trust God from his heart, and not trust himself with his head.

          1.     Scofield’s notes state that “trust,” (in reference to God), is found in the Old Testament 152 times.

          2.     As a parent, Solomon wanted his son to trust God for the sake of his own happiness.   (3:4)

III.     “In all thy ways acknowledge him (God)....”   (6)

     A.     Solomon received similar advice from his father, David.   (I Chronicles 28:9)

     B.     Solomon teaches his son to be totally dedicated to God with “all thine heart” (5), and “all thy ways.”  (6)

     C.     Every action of Solomon’s son is to be God-centered.

         - “Acknowledge him” means to admit that God is in control of his life.

     D.     “He shall direct thy paths.”   (6)

          1.     God will direct our future when we give him glory for the present.

          2.     To “direct” means to lead or orchestrate.

               -     God designs the path that we follow, and then He guides us down that path.

Conclusion:   Proverbs 3:5-6 are two verses that we can claim as promises from God.

          -     They would be good lie verses for any Christian
