THE TEN COMMANDMENTS CONTINUED

DEUTERONOMY 5:16-18

I.                   The Fifth Commandment: Honor thy father and thy mother…..(16).

1.         As adults, we are to realize that our  whole being came from God, and our well being  depends on God; to children, parents stand in the place of God.

2.         What God is to the adult, parents are to the child (lawgiver, provider, controller).

3.         A child’s response to parents will eventually carry over in their responses to God.

4.         God has ordained that children must obey those who love them and whom they love.

5.         Honoring parents teaches a quiet strength that prolongs life.

Rules produce order, no restraints produce recklessness and danger

II.     The Sixth Commandment:     Thou shalt not kill.     (17)

A.         The word “kill” means “to take innocent human life.”

1.         This is an impartial command and applies across the board to any person in any position in society.

2.         This does not apply to capital punishment.      (Exodus 21:12)

3.         This commandment protects the innocent citizen from becoming the victim of any ill-intentioned person.

B.         The reasons why God places such importance on human life can be traced:

1.         To the creation of Adam in Genesis 1:26.

2.         Your ability to reason, make things with your hands, invent – all is a product of the image of God.

3.         You are soul who will live forever.

C.         An understanding of this commandment allows us to see the terrible position of the modern Abortion movement.

1.         Abortion is the taking of innocent human life.

2.         Murder is the taking of innocent human life.

3.         In this commandment alone, we can see the value that God places on all human life.

III.     The Seventh Commandment:     “Neither shalt thou commit adultery.     (18)

A.         What is marriage?

1.         It is a set of Three vows:

-          to each other (til death)

-          to the state (to recognize you as a family unit)

-          to God (who brought you together and created the original family)

2.         Marriage is the creation of a new family, modeled after the first family.

-          We celebrate the birth of children (birthdays).

-          We celebrate the birth of families (anniversaries).

B.         What is Adultery?

1.         Adultery is the breaking of the before mentioned vows at the same time.

2.         Adultery is the breaking of an explicit commandment of God, which equals sin.

3.         Adultery is the undermining of God’s intentions, society’s greatest strength, and your own self-worth.

4.         Humanly speaking, Adultery is devastating to children and they pay the biggest price in insecurity, bitterness and instability.

Conclusion:     God’s original plan has not changed: One man, for one woman, for one life-time.
