PROVERBS 2:10-15

PRESERVED BY DISCRETION

Introduction:     Solomon continues his advice to his son about the importance of godly wisdom and godly living.

I.     Wisdom is not something that effects only the head.   (10)

     A.     Godly wisdom goes to the heart.

          1.     The heart is the seat of your emotions.

          2.     Godly wisdom enters the head and travels to the heart.

          3.     When godly wisdom guides your emotions, you will have a stable control of pressing circumstances.

               -     Sir Galahad was the strongest of knights because his heart was pure.

     B.     A heart full of godly wisdom makes your knowledge of right and wrong a pleasant experience.   (10)

          1.     Godly wise people desire to know right from wrong.

          2.     There is a joy that comes from knowing the difference between right and wrong.

II.     “Discretion shall preserve thee.”   (11)

     A.     Discretion is caution when facing decisions.

          1.     The psalmist stated that a good man will manage his belongings with discretion (caution).   Psalm 112:5

          2.     Godly wisdom uses discretion to determine the best course of action.

          3.     Discretion keeps us from worldly snares and pitfalls.

     B.     “understanding shall keep thee.”   (11)

          1.     The result of blending godly wisdom with godly discretion is a strong sense of “understanding.”

          2.     “Understanding” is the ability to see the reality of complex situations.

     C.     Godly discretion will deliver you from evil situations:   (12)

          1.     You will be delivered from “the way of the evil man.”   (12)

               -     You will avoid the terrible end of the evil man.

          2.     You will be delivered from the evil words of evil men.   (12)

               -     slander, threats, and wicked communication

          3.     You will be delivered from those who leave the right paths and “walk in darkness.”  (13)

          4.     You will be delivered from those who rejoice to do evil.”   (14)

               -     Godly discretion sees through this.

          5.     You will be delivered  from “the frowardness of the wicked.”   (14)

               -     “Frowardness” means to stubbornly turn away from God.

     D.     Evil men (12) follow a crooked way.   (15)

          1.     A crook  is a person who is crooked.

          2.     Godly men seek out straight paths, but ungodly men follow crooked paths.
