PROVERBS 2:6-9

THE SOURCE OF WISDOM

Introduction:     It makes sense to realize that Biblical wisdom can only come from God.

I.     “For the Lord giveth Wisdom”   (6)

     A.     Solomon wants his son to understand that the great source of godly wisdom is none other than God Himself.

          1.     Godly wisdom is not an innate characteristic of birth.

          2.     It is not the result of life’s experiences.

          3.     It is not the product of higher education.

     B.     The New Testament also lifts up God as the source of Biblical wisdom.

          1.     James 1:5, admonishes us to God for Wisdom.

          2.     The New Testament ridicules worldly wisdom when compared to worldly wisdom.

                                                                I Corinthians 3:19

     C.     The wisdom that comes from God can only come from God, and nowhere else.

II.     “out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”   (6)

     A.     God gives us the ability to know more about Him, and His Word.

     B.     God gives us the ability to understand what we know about Him.

          -     A deeper knowledge of God, and having the perspective of God, leads to understanding more clearly  the
mysteries of God in this world.

III.     “He layeth up sound Wisdom for the righteous.”   (7)

     A.     Godly people do have an advantage when it comes to life.

          1.     The ungodly person wanders through life, depending on his wits to see him through.

          2.     The godly person draws from a great reserve of Wisdom that has been set aside just for him.

     B.     “he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.”   (7)

          1.     A “buckler” is a shield, implying that godly wisdom is our defender.

          2.     While the godly person walks through life, before him goes a shield of protection that guards him from the
                  foolishness  of this world.

     C.     Notice that a person must be walking uprightly.

          -     When we lower our defenses, we open ourselves up to the snares of the world and Satan.

IV.     “He keepeth the paths of judgment.”   (8)

     A.     God keeps the ways that we are to travel.

          1.     Like a path through the woods is kept clear and worn, so God keeps our paths clear in life.

          2.     “The paths of judgment” are those paths in which God has already decreed that we should go.

     B.     “and preserveth the way of his saints.”   (8)

          1.     As we seek after God, God lays out for us certain paths, and he preserves those paths.

          2.     How can a child of God find his way in a dark world?

               -     by staying on the paths of God.

IV.     What are the results of walking in God’s Wisdom ?

      A.     God will give us an understanding of :

          1.     Righteousness - holy living

          2.     Judgment - what God has decreed to be right and wrong.

          3.     Equity - fairness and justice.

     B.     And as we continue on through life, God will reveal to us “every good path.”

          -     The godly person has been left with some sound wisdom to guide him through life.

Conclusion:   Let us remember the verse already referred to in James 1:5.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God....and it shall be given him.”
